    Osteoporosis Treatment

As you age, the body's creation of new bone tissue cannot keep up with the elimination of older tissue. The result is bones with a lower bone mineral density which means bones are more brittle, and can break or fracture more easily. When you learn your have osteoporosis, treatment can help preserve the bone mass you have left as well as rebuild bone mass. It is important to begin treatment as quickly as possible.

At Novant Health Osteoporosis Clinic, a diagnosis of osteoporosis or osteopenia is only the beginning of our services. Once your bone density problem has been identified, we work to put together a treatment plan that is just right for you. Osteoporosis treatment can include:

    • Medications taken by mouth, by injection or intravenously.
    • Hormone therapy including estrogen or testosterone replacement therapy.
    • Physical therapy including weight-bearing exercise to strengthen bones, and build and preserve bone mass. (Click here to learn more about physical therapy.)
    • Calcium supplements, vitamin D supplements and other treatments to preserve and rebuild bone mass.
